Ten Ways to Mix Across a Big Tempo Change

Garnish Music Production School·March 23, 2026

Ten ways to get from one tempo to another without a train wreck — ambient bridges, wide tempo, vinyl brakes, delays, spinbacks, washes, rolls and sync.

Every set has a moment where the next record is thirty BPM away. These are the ways across, from the quietest to the loudest. Learn all of them and use each for a different mood.

The quiet ways

  1. Play the beatless parts together. Find a section of each track with no percussion — a breakdown, an intro pad — and layer them. They must be in the same key or a compatible one; without drums there is nothing to hide a clash. Then bring the new tempo's drums in.
  2. An ambient tune in between. A short beatless track bridges any two tempos. Keep a few at hand; they are also the way out of a bad mix.
  3. Wide tempo, slow to a stop. Set the TEMPO range to WIDE, ride the slider all the way down so the track winds to nothing, and start the new one. Master Tempo off, or it will not sound like a slowdown.

Key shift on the player: when two beatless sections are a semitone apart, move one.

The loud ways

  1. Vinyl brake. Turn VINYL SPEED ADJ up so the stop is long, press pause, and the record grinds to a halt. Play the new track on the silence.
  2. Delay out. Put a long delay on the track, hit pause, and it trails off in echoes. Works best on a vocal line — the words hang in the air.
  3. Spinback. Spin the jog backwards hard; the track rewinds with a whoosh. Hit play on the new one as it dies.
  4. The wash. DUB ECHO and REVERB on the same channel at once, turned up until the track dissolves into noise and feedback. Pull the fader, play the new track through the tail.

The clever ways

  1. Roll into the new tempo. Put a ROLL on the outgoing track, but with the beat FX tempo set to the *incoming* track's BPM. Beatmatch the new track to the roll. Best on a vocal — the roll becomes a stutter that resolves into the new groove.
  2. Sync across a loop. Sync the two tracks, loop the outgoing one, mix the incoming track into the loop, then push the tempo slider up or down to the new tempo — the loop follows — and mix out into the new track at its own speed.

Do this now

Pick two tracks thirty BPM apart. Get from one to the other ten different ways and record all ten. Two of them will be good. Work out why.
