Oscillator Effects
Oscillators are often equipped with various Oscillator Effects tp modify and shape the waveforms.They are not effects in the common sense of the word but rather tools to affect the sound at its source.
- Frequency Modulation (FM) Same synthesis method as in Operator, whereby the wavetable is the carrier and a hidden second sine wave oscillator acts as the modulator.
- Oscillator 1 shows the unmodulated wavetable (basic waveforms) and Oscillator 2 uses FM synthesis whereby Tune controls the Ratio and Amount the Index.
- Pulse Width/Sync: Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is a classic synthesis tool in subtractive synthesis and we used it in Analog with a square wave only as a modulation technique where the width of a square wave is varied. Sync is a modulation technique that resets the phase of an oscillator to the phase of another oscillator, creating higher harmonics. It’s great for cutting, guitar like lead sounds. .
- Phase Distortion: is a form of synthesis that modulates the phase of an oscillator to create new waveforms. In Wavetable, phase distortion is created with the Fold and Warp controls. Fold adds harmonics to the waveform by folding the waveform back on itself. Warp changes the shape of the waveform by stretching and compressing the wavetables read out over time, similarly to what we can do with Ableton’s Warping function.The readout of the waveforms get sped up in a section which slows it down in the following section. This synthesis method is referred to as Modern as it’s mostly used for super hard sounding timbres as used in modern electronic e.g hard dubstep.
